Bandwidth Is Needed to Run Your Website, But How Much?

July 31st, 2009

rucial meetings with your business partners to determine your company image and Internet strategy. You've worked with an accomplished and savvy web designer to get that image and important information prepared for clients and new prospects alike. But when your popularity increases with online traffic, how do you make sure that your website runs smoothly enough to sustain all of the attention that you're getting? The answer is bandwidth. And without it, you're nothing. So get the most that is appropriate for your site. But first, you must learn a little about it.

What exactly is bandwidth? It is the amount of information that can be transferred from a website through your server to online users on a monthly basis. Bandwidth is always expressed in the amount of data, measured in bits, transmitted in one second of time. It looks like this-64Kbps-which means 64 kilobits per second. Remember to distinguish “bits” from “bytes,” as there are eight bits in every one byte. Therefore, 64Kbps is 8KB per second.

Measuring your needs

How much bandwidth you get and how much you need can be different, depending on many factors, such as a sudden increase in traffic to your site, your server's overall bandwidth capabilities, the other sites on your shared server (if that's what you have) and the type of site that you maintain.

Let's say that the server that you use leases a line that allows 3Mbps. This simply means that the server can handle a total maximum of 3Mbits of information from all of its sites in any given second. When there is an unusually high amount of traffic some users will experience varying delays in getting information – slow downloads, etc. – while other users may be prevented from connecting altogether. A lot of servers are shared and not necessarily devoted exclusively to a single website. So, you have to understand that if you share a server for your company website, those other websites will simultaneously and continuously be using up precious bandwidth available through the server, too. And this will affect you.

If you have a relatively simple, straightforward and static website, it is pretty easy to figure out the amount of bandwidth that you'll need. Let's say that your brand new, super-cool and well-made home page has graphic images, back-end style sheets and HTML that add up to 70KB (Kilobytes, not kilobits) per second for each user looking at it. That simply means that 70KB is used from your monthly allowance of bandwidth for your site. But that's just one person taking a look and engaging with your site. What about two people? Or ten people? Or even 100 people or more? We'll say that 100 users take a look at your home page on a daily basis. That simply means that you'd use 7MB of bandwidth that's allowed in your monthly contract with your host (70KB times 100 users = 7MB). For the 30 days in a month, then, you'll use 210MB per month. But things change. Traffic increases. Many sites become complicated with elaborate flash design elements and high-resolution graphics and so on. Your bandwidth needs could be much more. But that's no problem, since most hosts these days include unlimited bandwidth except in the lowest priced plans. Bandwidth is rarely an issue anymore.

A lot of site builders and users take the tiny amount of free hosting space provided with their ISP accounts. This has other problems associated with it, too. For one thing, you will not get to use your own domain name, but will have an address that starts with “members” or some other term that gives away the fact that you are using a freebie account. Additionally, you will normally be restricted to using a low-power cookie-cutter page design program with limited templates. It is far better to determine what you need first then find a hosting plan among the many available that works for you. Beware of hosts that offer an open-ended deal that allows increased bandwidth that entails increased fees. These fees can be much more than the unit breakdown rate in your original deal. Time was when hosts would even shut down websites when the customer went over the bandwidth limit. Make sure you get one of the newest, unlimited bandwidth plans and you will be fine, as long as you get the other important features that you have determined that you need.Amy Armitage is the head of Business Development for Lunarpages. What is Better Than The 10 Best Work at Home Jobs?

July 31st, 2009

I admit it, I was sucked into reading an article on one of the major search engines this morning titled “The 10 best work at home jobs”. Although, actually, their point was that those 10 work at home jobs are “real” and “legitimate”.

While I agree that the jobs they listed which included translator, web designer and teacher are “real” jobs, they are not exactly jobs just anyone can pick up today and start doing. You need to have a particular highly developed skill in order to do them.

Other jobs mentioned, like franchise owner, can take an awful lot of up front cash that not everyone has laying around. When you buy a franchise you typically have just solved someone else's cash problem but you are a long way from solving yours.

I would like to devote the rest of this article to an income stream that many do not consider a job. It is better than a “job” and better in my opinion than those 10 best work at home jobs that other article was espousing.

What I am referring to is article marketing, sometimes known as “bum marketing”. Article marketing is something most anyone can do with just a computer, borrowed at the library if necessary, and an internet connection.

With article marketing you chose a product or a service that you have some interest in, even a video game would work, and write articles to promote that product or service and receive a commission when someone buys.

Let me be clear about one thing, you do not have to be a writer. In fact, some people hire others to write for them. You can have quality articles written for just a few dollars. Some companies with a product will even give you articles to modify and use for free.

I consider article marketing to be one of the best work at home jobs for the following reasons:
You can work from home, a coffee shop, anywhere
You need zero money to start
You work on your own schedule, any time of the day or night
No one cares what you look like, talk like, or act like
It does not matter how young or how old you are
You need no previous experience or “resume”
Your income potential is unlimited

What could possibly beat that? Doesn't that sound like the kind of “job” you have always wanted?

How about co-workers and friends? People who work online with article marketing usually have more friends and co-workers than anyone I know. If they do not live near each other they email, skype and twitter each other.

You meet those friends and co-workers at conferences that you attend in fun locations with the money you earned working at home online. And that “conference at a fun location” is probably tax deductible (check with your accountant).

Do not wait any longer to start a new life. One of the best work at home jobs is waiting for you right now. All you need is a little guidance and direction to get started.

Get the guidance and direction you need at my website dedicated to teaching people just like you how to earn money online. Go to www.HowToEarnMoneyVideo.com and start right now.

Buy Website Templates – Providers Like Template Monster With Minimal Effort!

July 27th, 2009

Since the birth of computers and operating systems, it seems like everyone and their mom and dad have a website these days? For example, take local and national television commercials, have you noticed how often they display various products and/or services and how each one has a website which includes their web address prominently displayed? In most cases, all you would actually see is their web address in bold letters and then their 1-800 number for ordering purposes. Let me give you another example, like the TV commercial often televised, the famous “Cash4Gold.com” and hundreds more like it. Well you too can have your very own website and all you would need to do is buy website templates that are professionally designed and pre-made. Basically one that is ready for prime time use!

Speaking of web design, I'm assuming you want the easy route of owning a website with minimal effort right? Well, in today's time, that is highly possible for you to do so, but of course you can always design your own website from scratch but why bother? Especially, when you have hordes of professional template service providers like Template Monster, Dream Templates and others alike that can provide you with sleek premium web design templates that are ready to use with little to no designing skills for you to know and learn.

There are literally hundreds of template options available for you to choose from, but there are only a few top quality template service providers that offer a wide array of design choices and styles like (e.i. Joomla, Flash, HTML, Swish, CSS and others). Also, web template categories can range from many of the most popular industries like “health and fitness”, “legal”, “Realty”, “Internet & Computers” and many more! However, there are some templates that will require a little technical/coding knowledge, but those are more advanced and of course will cost a little more to obtain and own.

Just like most people, who don't have a clue about website coding, design layouts etc, perhaps buying website templates is the overall best answer for you! There are literally hundreds if not thousands of sleek web 2.0 design templates to choose from. If you do a quick search, I can assure that you will find a suitable service provider within your template design needs and budget. If you are not sure which ones to trust and use, try finding and using a “Review Site” which would help narrow down your options by providing you with a quick company overview, pricing points, etc.

Buying professionally designed web site templates most will normally come with a set of instructions specific to that template design. Some may require a simple copy and paste of code that would have been already written for you. Others may just point out different ways you can enhance or modify an existing template. The neatest thing about HTML web templates specifically, is that you can quickly and easily build or add to the existing template design for a more customized look. Or you can just use it as is with no changes at all! One final note, please make sure you read the terms and conditions of the site you plan to buy website templates from, especially before buying and using a specific template. This way you will know what to do in case a template is faulty by design.

Organic SEO for Small Businesses – Part V

July 27th, 2009

Abstract: A detailed look at this area of search engine optimization focussing on relevant links targeted towards small businesses, organizations and sole traders.

Intended Audience: Small Business Owners/webmasters and anyone new to the world of web design and search engine optimization (SEO) particularly those working with small businesses, organizations and sole traders.

Note: Part IV of this series of articles was published on July 22nd, 2009 and can be viewed at http://www.istech.ie/blog/?p=127

The fourth article in this series focused on trusted links and we will continue the link theme in this article and take a look at relevant links and their significance in improving your website's position on search engine results pages.

Let's take a look at the concept of a relevant link. Consider the following examples:

1. A website about motor bikes linking to a website about fishing.
2. A dental care website linking to a dental association website

Obviously example 1 is not a relevant link while example 2 is a relevant link. A search engine will attach more value to link illustrated in example 2. A large number of non-relevant links can also be detrimental to your website's rankings on search engines and should be avoided.

The golden rule of relevant links is that links are from websites with content that is relevant to the content of your website. It is preferable to have relevant backlinks from a number of different websites but if you are able to acquire a number of backlinks from a particular website then it is important to have them point to different pages on your website i.e. not all backlinks should go to your home page.

It may be possible to have an SEO company unearth a list of relevant backlinks but remember that you are the best judge of which websites are relevant to your website so it's worth doing some research to establish your own personal criteria for a relevant backlinks. Sources of relevant backlinks include:

* Your Suppliers
* Industry Specific Websites and Blogs
* Industry Specific Forums

If you do decide to outsource the placing of relevant links to an external company it is important to retain control over the link approval process i.e. approve links before they are established not after as it can often take time to remove a link especially after it's been indexed by the search engines.

Your competitors are often a good source of information about where you should look for relevant websites to get a link. You can use Yahoo Search's linkdomain function to display a list of all websites that link to a competitor website.
The next article in this series will expand on the topic of free and paid web directories, social media, local directory services etc.

Linux and Windows Server Web Hosting, What are the Advantages

July 23rd, 2009

When you make the decision to create and maintain a website, one choice you will have to make is what web host company you would like to use. Much of the web host decision will depend on cost and need, but part of it will have to do with platform.

There are two host platforms from which to choose, Linux and Windows. Which you choose to use will be mostly based on what web design program and language you intend to use. Website languages, like PHP, Perl, and MySql will all work best with a Linux platform, while software like Visual Basic will only work on Windows platform.

If you intend to hire someone to design and maintain your website, be sure to allow him or her to be a part of the web host decision-making process. They will know what platform is needed since they will be building the site.

What are the advantages to each of the platforms? Here you will find information about the two. If you have a choice of platform, you will need to decide which will work best for you.

When it comes to Linux, one of the main advantages is that the software is free. Since the company does not require licenses and fees, you can save quite a bit of money on the software download.

There are a plethora of scripting languages that work well with Linux. You can make use of PHP, Perl, and MySql without a problem. In addition, Linux built sites are not very hard to convert if you need to move them to a Windows platform.

With Windows platforms, you will find that certain scripting programs work perfectly. Programs like Visual Basic and ASP only work with Windows platforms.

Windows platforms handle more extravagant and interactive features very well. If you need a searchable set of information, then Windows databases work well. Any program that is designed by Microsoft Company will work very well with a Windows based platform.

When choosing between the two platforms, keep in mind the Linux is much more cost effective and Windows interacts well with other programs. Which you choose to use may depend on the web building software you already have or which program your web designer prefers. However, each has its own unique set of advantages.

Choosing the right platform can be very important in order to offer the best website of high quality and content.

Why Money Spent On A Web Designer Is Money Well Spent

July 21st, 2009

Many people appreciate the efficient, clean design of a good website. Even if you don't consciously sit there and silently congratulate the designer on a job well done, you will still appreciate the hard work that has gone into it. You will do this through the continued exploration of that site, as you easily move from one page to the next, exploring all there is to offer from this reliable and professional company that you have found.

You will also no doubt be able to recall what you have done on the occasions where your surfing has led you to a sub-standard website. How do you feel when you find a site that is selling exactly what you want but their site design looks so amateur you hesitate in buying from them?

It's frustrating and tempting all at the same time – and that is the reason why it's worth spending money on a web designer. It's one of the most important parts of web marketing, because your website is going to be online right across the world every minute of every day. You can't afford for it to be sub-standard.

So if you are having trouble justifying the cost of a good web designer, you should shift your focus to the end result you will get. Compare that to what you would have if you tried to create a website yourself, or attempted to cut corners in any way. In the end, it is the final result that you need to think about. The more sales you want to make, the more money you should be prepared to invest up front to give the right impression.

If you are still struggling with the idea of spending money on a web designer, try putting yourself back into the position of visiting other peoples' websites. You may be well aware that you are trustworthy and able to fulfil all the orders that come your way but the fact is that your customers do not know you. They don't know that you won't just disappear with their money and not send their order. You have to convince them of that – and having a professional website design is the first step towards doing that.

Of course a good website designer will also know a lot about search engine optimization and other important topics. SEO is essential to you getting found online and the right web design can be the difference between a top 100 ranking and a first page ranking. All these elements to help you position yourself higher up the search results will be integrated for you by a good designer. If you were going to create your own website, not only would it take longer but these important elements would probably not be anywhere near as well done either.

So think carefully if you are in the market for a new website. Where do you want to be in a year from now? Do you want to be struggling with a website that doesn't look the part? Or do you want to have a website that is professionalArticle Submission, efficient and bringing in more orders than you thought it would?

Evaluating the Brother MFC-7840W and the TN 360 Toner

July 18th, 2009

The inception of the electronic revolution, which gave birth to computers, fax machines, copiers, and a continuously evolving line of faster, better, smaller and cheaper office technology has made it possible for almost every family to start a business from home.

Among other things, this has allowed individuals the convenience of having both work and family, and even socials, consolidated in one place. A disadvantage though, is one's tendency to lose privacy while working. It could be quite difficult for family to realize you're working when you're at home, and the kids' playroom encroaching into your office isn't a remote possibility. Given the limited space, defining the "zones" and designating the areas at home to organize one's workspace can be challenging, too.

With the home office user in mind, come the "MFP" or multi-function printer. Also called "AIO's" or all-in-one, these nifty gadgets are essentially a (laser or inkjet) printer, a copier, a scanner, and a fax machine, fused together in one compact unit. They are as multi-talented as the multi-tasking work-from-home users they were intended for, and are perfect for maximizing much-needed workspace as well as money.

A multi-function printer I would recommend is the Brother MFC-7840W, a monochrome laser all-in-one printer, scanner, fax, and copier, with a quick warm up time of less than 30 seconds. The “W” in its name stands for “wireless”, a feature which makes this excellent all-in-one even more special. This machine is a power-packed small wonder that can be had for about $300.

This AIO printer (works with the TN-330 and TN-360 toners) was designed with the home office user in mind, and its features are guaranteed to keep them happy. Its automatic document feeder comes with security features that allow a password to be set, making them virtually childproof. The setup for this printer's wireless function takes very little effort, what with the networking built in. The user has to do little more than type in the security code (WEP key) of the home network, as the printer is smart enough to do the rest on its own. That's definitely a plus for home office users who do not enjoy the luxury of a dedicated IT department. Another come-on is that since this printer has wireless features, it doesn't need to be wired to a computer and can be setup across the room or anywhere wireless signals will allow.

I cannot think of anything negative to say about this printer, except perhaps that like other laser printers, replacing the toner will be expensive. A consolation would be to note that laser printers require less frequent cartridge replacement than inkjets as toners last longer. Then there are toner-saver settings that can be found on this printer. Above all, toner cost problems can be easily licked by using the budget-friendly remanufactured toner cartridges in place of pricey OEMs.
T
he Brother TN-330 and TN-360 compatible laser toner cartridges work with the Brother MFC-7840W. The TN-330 has a standard yield of 1,500 pages at 5% coverage. The Brother TN360 prints a high yield of up to 2,600 pages at 5% coverage. Encased in a hard plastic shell, the TN-360 is easy to install and will slide perfectly into your printer. It is also compatible with the Brother MFC-7440N, Brother MFC-7320, Brother HL-2170W, Brother HL-2150N, Brother HL-2140, and Brother DCP-7030 machines.

This replacement toner cartridge can be easily availed of at various online stores , selling remanufactured and compatible replacement ink cartridges for all the leading brands like HP, Brother, Lexmark, Epson, Canon, Xerox, and Dell.

Components that affect Web site investment size

July 16th, 2009

Here are the different components that affect the investment size of a developed and hosted Web site.

Cost type 1: Strategic planning, web design and Web development
Cost type 2: Monthly or yearly Web site hosting
Cost type 3: Daily/Monthly/Periodic Web site maintenance
Cost type 4: Web site traffic building

Last article we looked at how a custom homebuilder handled my request for an estimate. We learned they don't have any magic estimating bullet, but can provide a general cost range with planning guidance. We also learned they have trouble servicing potential customers without a budget.

This week, let's look at the different components that affect the investment size of a developed and hosted Web site.

There are 4 basic cost types, all with many interdependencies.

Cost type 1: Strategic planning, web design and Web development
Cost type 2: Monthly or yearly Web site hosting
Cost type 3: Daily/Monthly/Periodic Web site maintenance
Cost type 4: Web site traffic building

Let's take a look at each in more detail:

1. Strategic Planning, Design and Development

A Web site should be designed to accomplish measurable business objectives. (The operative word is measurable.)

The time to compose a strategic plan depends on the number and complexity of each objective. For example, a company might want to use Web technology to help increase first time and repeat purchases, repeat Web site visits, newsletter subscriptions, and overall lead capture. They might want to implement cross-sell and up-sell strategies, reduce call center volume or eliminate administrative support.

That's 9 total objectives, all of which vary in complexity and planning time.

On the other hand, a small business typically has one or two burning objectives. They all say, “give me qualified sales leads and ample Web site traffic.” Planning time is, of course, much less.

Side note: When budgets are limited, be sure to perform a cost/benefit analysis for each objective and implement those that will yield the highest return in the shortest amount of time. Check out: How to present a case for Web site investments.

Once all business and marketing objectives are defined, more planning time is needed to set targets and benchmarks. For example, attract 2,500 unique visitors, receive 100 newsletter subscriptions, sell 50 widgets online and capture 50 widget-enhancement leads per month.

This way, you can track your site's performance at meeting each objective against targets every month and prove whether or not the investment is producing a return. ROI is the only justification for Web initiatives.

Next, more planning time is needed to determine how Web technology (coupled with sales, marketing and usability strategies) will accomplish those defined objectives. This ties into interface, database and functionality design, as well as content creation and copywriting.

Then, time is needed for design, development (scripting, writing HTML, database connectivity), testing the Web site for performance errors and transferring it to its hosting environment.

So you see, the investment size is dependent on the design and development time, which is determined by the strategic plan, which in turn depends solely on the business and marketing objectives.

(Objectives) x [(Strategic Planning) + (Design & Development)] = Investment Size

2. Web site hosting

Hosting costs are, you guessed it, dependant on the technology used to develop the Web site and the resources (bandwidth, hardware, software and uptime reliability) used by the Web server. (A Web server is where the Web site resides in Cyberspace.)

Dedicated Web hosting (meaning only your Web site resides on the server) may cost anywhere from $250 – $5,000 per month. Some dedicated hosting solutions include all of the hardware and software, Internet connectivity, a firewall for protecting data and managed services such as 24×7 support and daily data backups. Some solutions also include traffic analysis reports (to help track objectives), and the ability to authenticate and transfer credit card transactions.

Others require customers to buy or rent its software separately.

One would select a dedicated hosting solution if he or she wants to sell various products online, host with multiple Web servers, capture and exchange massive amounts of data (through forms and other ordering systems), use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption for commerce and integrate with off-line inventory and billing systems.

On the other hand, a static, non-interactive Web site would not require a dedicated Web server and could reside in a “shared environment” (meaning your Web site resides on a server with several others). This could cost as little as $10 per month. Hosting charges are defined by the technology used to operate and maintain the Web site.

3. Web site maintenance

The cost to maintain a Web site varies as well. Most non-technical Web site managers want the convenience and control for changes. Others would rather keep a partner on retainer and request changes periodically.

Here are a few maintenance options and their associated costs:

If your site is composed of static HTML pages, you can purchase MS Front Page for around $175 and make changes at will. All you need is FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clearance from your Web host. If your site uses VB Script, JavaScript or other (non HTML) scripting languages, avoid publishing with Front Page.

If your Web site is a little more advanced, you may want to consider Macromedia's Dream Weaver. It's a little more flexible, a little more technical, but much less likely to corrupt your pages when publishing. You can purchase a license for about $300 and transfer new and modified pages with your browser via FTP.

Another option is to investigate content management utilities. They can be purchased as a “one-size-fits-all” solution or developed to your specifications.

These can be expensive, but will make publishing Web pages easier than using MS Word. Web site maintenance cost depends on your method of publishing.

4. Web site traffic building

There are many ways to drive traffic to a Web site and all have different costs. Using search engines and directories are the only method that should be addressed before the site is actually developed.

Let me explain…

To rank well on the various search engines and directories (Yahoo, MSN, Netscape, Google, AltaVista, etc.), your Web site must be optimized with specific, targeted and “not-so-competitive” keywords. This requires a little competitive intelligence, creative copy writing and technical know-how.

Once you have your key word list, strategically plant them like little seeds throughout your Web page in places such as links, title tags, alt tags, header copy, page names, etc.

To do this after a site has been developed could require a major overhaul.

For example, we invested many long-hour days to research the most commonly used “web design” related search terms. We then determined how competitive our geographic landscape was for each of those terms and optimized our site accordingly. We did this before the first page was designed.

As a result, we rank in the top 10 of almost every search engine for our search terms. The extra time for analysis and planning will pay dividends for years.

A specialty company may charge as much as $10,000 for the analysisScience Articles, optimization and submission service. There are also fixed costs payable to the search engines. I think we paid a little under $600 to cover the “Non-Pay-Per-Click” playing field.

So there you have it. When it's all said and done…
